Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and a favourite destination in the Mediterranean. The capital is Heraklion and close by is the Palace at Knossos, the famous centre of Minoan culture and emblem of the island. This is the isle of Zeus, who was supposedly born near the Lasithi Plateau. Crete has many beautiful beaches, including Ammudara, Karteros, Amnisos, Tobrouk and Arina. For a slightly calmer beach try Kalamaki. Tip: the only palm-lined beach on the island is the date palm grove at Vai on the east coast, which is actually a protected area.
